When important family or medical needs arise, Inova will work with you to arrange for the leave needed to focus on you and your family.

Inova Medical Leave

Inova Medical Leave is designed for team members who have not yet met the eligibility requirements for the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). You can use Inova Medical Leave in your first year of employment for the same types of leave as defined by FMLA. Inova Medical Leave is unpaid and does not provide job protection. For more information, refer to PolicyStat.

Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA)

If you have exhausted your vacation time, you may be able to take an unpaid leave of absence for nonmedical personal matters, including family matters not covered by other time away policies. The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) entitles an eligible employee to take a job-protected leave for specified family and medical reasons as noted in the Family and Medical Leave Act on PolicyStat.

FMLA provides up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected family/medical leave. Upon your return, you will be restored to the same or a comparable position. To be eligible for FMLA, you must:

  • Have been employed by the Inova for at least 12 months (The 12-month threshold includes periods of paid and unpaid leave (sick, vacation) during which benefits or compensation are provided. If you are rehired by the company, employment periods prior to a break in service of seven years or more are not counted (longer if the break was the result of certain military service) toward the 12-month employment requirement.);
  • Have worked at least 1,250 hours within the last 12-month period for Inova (Only actual hours worked are counted towards the 1,250 threshold); and
  • Work at a workplace with 50 or more employees within a 75 mile radius.

The 12-month period in which you may take 12 weeks of leave will be measured as a “rolling” 12-month period dating back from the time you request the leave.

See the PolicyStat for more details.

Organ Donation Leave

Inova recognizes and understands the importance of organ and tissue donation. In an effort to encourage team members to participate in this life-giving process, Inova provides time away with pay during the organ donation and recovery period. You are eligible to take Organ Donation Leave if you:

  • Are budgeted to work 60 or more hours per pay period
  • Have been employed by Inova for at least six months as of the date of the procedure, and
  • Are not on an approved unpaid leave of absence for another reason at the time of the donation.

If eligible, you must request Organ Donation Leave by first completing the Organ Donation Certification of Information Form, indicating the impact of undergoing the donation procedure on their work schedule. If you’d like to use Organ Donation leave, you must:

  • Advise your manager thirty (30) days in advance of the need to take Organ Donation Leave, if possible. If there is an urgent request, please give as much notice as possible.
  • Submit documentation from the treating physician indicating the type of donation and expected time off needed.
  • File an STD claim with The Hartford if he or she is expected to be out for more than five (5) consecutive workdays.

You will be paid 100% of base pay for two weeks and 66 2/3% Short-Term Disability for up to 24 weeks, or earlier if recovered. You will continue to be covered under Inova benefits for which you are enrolled at the time of the leave. To file a claim, contact The Hartford at 888-301-5615.

Inova requires a team member returning from Organ Donation Leave to provide a Fitness for Duty Form from their treating physician, approving a return to work and specifying any physical restrictions. The Fitness for Duty Form must be submitted to eServices at eServices@inova.org or faxed to 703-205-2144 prior to returning to work.
